Ardis Berghoff, a seasoned freelance writer

Since I founded Clerestory Communications in 1995, brevity has become as important as quality in many forms of business writing. The only way to combine both with aplomb is through a strong sense for what companies need in the written word.

Good writing starts with a solid foundation. After graduating with honors and a degree in English from Vassar College (Poughkeepsie, NY), I worked for Fortune 500 companies, a major non-profit and two PR firms. In the process, I managed publications, publicity campaigns and community relations programs. I became an independent corporate writer in 1995 and have freelanced full time ever since.

A Happy Client

For many years, I worked with Ardis when I was the workforce diversity manager at USG. My job would have been difficult without her. She helped us craft our quarterly newsletters. I was pleased to find that she was aware of the trends in the industry and always had creative ideas to communicate to our employees. Ardis is easy to work with and always delivered a product we were proud of. Diversity is one of our core values, so it was important that our communication around it be clear and relevant. Ardis made that happen!

Erica M. Roberts, manager of training and development, USG Corporation

To keep my writing fresh, I am a member of the International Association of Business Communicators and on the board of directors for the Off Campus Writers’ Workshop, the oldest writers’ group in the nation. I also write for consumer magazines and have several books in the works - I live and breathe my profession.

Flexibilty and insight. From special projects to ongoing assignments that have lasted years, I have had the privilege of writing for some of the finest companies in Chicago and nationwide. I am adept at short forms, such as marketing brochures, where every word requires punch. I’m an expert at long forms, including feature stories on complex subjects. I’m also well versed in producing the headlines and short chunks that skimmers of electronic media need.

The proof is in the details. You will have a partner who delivers solid writing, creative ideas and no nonsense. Send me to get the facts from busy managers, shop-floor workers and executives. I’m a savvy interviewer and dogged researcher. Add me to a team of marketers, graphic designers and clients. I work well with other contractors and folks outside our realm such as HR and IT staff. Give me a well-developed concept or have me create the story from scratch. I have a strong instinct for shaping messages that grab readers‘ attention. Finally, every client has budget and deadline concerns. I will respect yours, so tell me your parameters.
